sports coach UK: Coaches key in Olympic success
sports coach UK congratulates the coaches who helped Team GB’s athletes to an unprecedented medal haul at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
UK Sport has identified coaching as a key element of its high-performance system and sports coach UK is working to support the development of the next generation of coaches to progress onto UK Sport’s elite programmes.
This work includes the Inspire Programme that supports the development of coaches of athletes who have the potential to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.
sports coach UK also manages the Aspire Programme, designed to provide targeted development for coaches who have a realistic aspiration of coaching athletes at future Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Commonwealth Games.
Excellent coaching is important at all levels and sports coach UK works with governing bodies of sport and in all the Home Countries, supporting the development of their coaching systems. This work is important in ensuring that the right coaches, with the right qualifications are in the right place at the right time to meet participant demand. This is especially important in meeting the surge in interest inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as excellent coaching will enhance a participant’s enjoyment and sense of achievement, making it more likely they will continue to play sport.
sports coach UK CEO Dr Tony Byrne said: “sports coach UK is committed to the development of excellence in coaching at all levels and to support Partners implement systems to recruit, develop and retain coaches.”
